Bonnier launching Popular Science in Australia.

JUNE 2008

Some Bonnier is launching the popular science publication Popular Science in Australia. The magazine will be published under license by WW Media, an Australian publisher. In conjunction with this development, Bonnier will collect all of its licensing activities in one company – Bonnier International Magazines.

Popular Science is published by Bonnier AB’s American subsidiary Bonnier Corporation. In Australia, it will be published by the Sydney-based publishing company WW Media. The first issue of the new edition will be published in October 2008, making Australia the seventh country to publish Popular Science.

In order to gain better control over licensing of Bonnier’s magazine titles, Bonnier AB is also founding Bonnier International Magazines (BIM). BIM will manage all magazine title licensing from Bonnier Corporation, Bonnier Publications and Bonnier Tidskrifter, all of which are Bonnier AB subsidiaries.

“Bonnier publishes over 150 magazines, and many of them have international potential. By establishing a company that solely focuses on developing title licensing, we hope to increase our international businesses substantially over the next few years,” says Anders Malmsten who has been tasked with developing the new organization.

The Australian edition of Popular Science brings Bonnier’s total number of licensed editions of its magazines to 19. Besides Popular Science, the largest licensed titles are Illustrerad Vetenskap, Illustrerad Vetenskap Historia, Parenting and Transworld Skateboarding. Popular Science was launched for the first time in the U.S. in 1872. It is the fifth largest magazine in the U.S. for men with over six million readers. Popular Science is also published under license in Israel, China, Korea, Russia and Spain.

Bonnier Corporation, which is part of the Bonnier Magazine Group business area, is one of the largest publishing groups in the U.S. It is a leading media company that offers over 40 specialist magazines to the general public, in addition to pursuing related multimedia projects and other activities.
